Played the Green Dragon in Croydon last night with Mark Woods (a new act on me), Cris Tanzi and co (thanks again for the lift home) and Superman Revenge Squad (aka Ben Parker). The last time I played with Ben was a while back, and then (as last night) he played “Pupkin”, a great song which nevertheless is disparaging about Billy Corgan’s lyrical prowess… and at that gig I’d played the majestic “Mayonnaise”, scoring a point for Mr Corgan. Last night I rather unadvisedly decided on the spur of the moment to cover “Disarm”, forgot the chords, carried on playing anyway and consequently balled it right in the ball (one point to Superman Revenge Squad). I like to think that lack of preparation is the antifolk way… which reminds me that SRS is supporting Jeffrey Lewis at the Brixton Windmill later this month, which is amazing! I’ve never really got into Jeffrey Lewis but I know Ben’s a big fan and I can only imagine what that must feel like – until I get my support slot with M Ward/Radiohead/Tom Waits/God…
I’ve recruited Cris and Ben for an exciting plan for the New Year, which I’m not going to say too much about yet, but will also feature Gavin Osborn from Answer Me This!/”being a great songwriter and all-round dude” fame. Watch this virtual space.
